Extensive phasematching and optical transmission range

Beta-barium borate (BBO) is a versatile nonlinear crystal ideally suited to phasematching applications.

Phasematching from visible to far ultraviolet. BBO offers a phasematching range of 410 to 2,100 nm and optical transmission from 200 to 2,100 nm. Key features include large nonlinear coefficients, a high threshold for laser damage, and a low thermo-optic coefficient.

Harmonic Generation. BBO is suitable for use in a variety of applications, including second harmonic generation of wavelengths as short as 204.8 nm, with shorter wavelengths possible using sum frequency mixing. Mixing the first and fourth harmonic generates the fifth harmonic of Nd:YAG, while mixing the output of a Ti:sapphire laser generates ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths over a wide range.

Crystal protection. BBO crystals are available with a dielectric coating to protect polished surfaces from fogging due to ambient moisture. Because BBO is water soluble, unprotected polished surfaces easily become fogged during typical laboratory use. Coatings also reduce reflections from polished surfaces, improving transmission quality for all wavelengths.

Multiple sizes, orientations. We fabricate and polish BBO crystals in a wide range of standard and custom sizes and orientations. Available lengths range from 50 µm for short-pulse work to 15 mm for nanosecond OPO/OPA use. All crystals are oriented in a double crystal x-ray spectrometer and are accurate to ± 5 minutes.
